About the Role

Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is seeking a qualified Adjunct Instructor to teach Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) certification training. This position supports the College's workforce and career training mission by preparing students for entry-level and advanced careers in fiber optics and telecommunications.

The Adjunct Instructor will deliver hands-on and classroom-based instruction aligned with the CFOT curriculum. Instruction may include short-term workforce training, evening or weekend classes, and customized training for industry partners.

Teaching opportunities include Fiber Optics Splicing, Pole Climbing and Safety, or both subject areas. Candidates with expertise in only one area are encouraged to apply. Please indicate your area(s) of interest and qualifications in your letter of application.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver CFOT certification training in accordance with approved curriculum and industry standards
  • Provide hands-on instruction in fiber optics theory, safety, installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments
  • Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate records
  • Ensure a safe learning environment, particularly during lab-based activities
  • Maintain current knowledge of fiber optics technologies and workforce trends
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and college administrators
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned
  • May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor

Requirements

  • Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) certification (required)
  • 5 years non-teaching work experience working in fiber optics, telecommunications, or a related field
  • Ability to teach technical concepts to adult learners with diverse backgrounds
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Commitment to student success and workforce development
  • Instructional faculty must reside in the state of Virginia or be available to teach in-person classes at one of the SWCC locations (Main Campus, Lebanon, Bluefield, Southern Gap)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree
  • Experience providing technical education in classroom/small group setting
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Experience delivering workforce or industry-based training

Pay

$40.00 per instructional hour
