About the School

The School of Data and Information Sciences (SDIS) was founded in 2026 by joining the School of Information and Library Science (established 1931) and the School of Data Science and Society (established 2022). SDIS combines longstanding excellence in information and library science with leadership in data science, including computational and statistical methods and societal applications. Home to a top-ranked library and information science program, SDIS is recognized for strong teaching, research, and service. The School is the home of the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) and the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP).

SDIS teaches and trains undergraduate and graduate students in data science, health informatics, information science, and library science, as well as offers certificates for adult learners. The School conducts research and scholarship across the data and information lifecycle, emphasizing human-centric, ethical, and applied approaches. About the Role

Adjunct Instructors teach live, online, synchronous, and asynchronous class sessions. Key responsibilities include:

• Following a standardized course syllabus and class plan, using pre-developed instructional materials for each course.
• Engaging class members in discussions during sessions, leveraging the instructor’s unique background and expertise to help students apply new knowledge to real-world problems.
• Providing verbal and written feedback to students and grading student work.
• Supporting student learning by establishing and communicating regular office hours and responding to student questions or issues related to the course.
• Maintaining regular communication with the Division Chair about students’ experiences, potential barriers, and ideas for enhancement.

Requirements

• Earned doctorate or terminal degree in the same or closely related discipline as the course taught.
• In lieu of a terminal degree, instructors may qualify through professional experience or a combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

• Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively manage group discussions.
• Strong writing skills, with experience providing feedback on written assignments.
• Degree and experience in a relevant discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

• Significant work and/or teaching experience directly related to the course being taught.
• Experience teaching in higher education.
