About the Role

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote, and online. Adjunct faculty are employed to teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semester and/or up to 8 credit hours during summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and staffing needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Must reside in the DC, VA, or MD (DMV) area.

Responsibilities

  • Teach specific classes in ESL.
  • Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
  • Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).
  • Maintain current competence in the discipline or field of specialization.
  • Meet assigned classes regularly and submit required records and reports.
  • Teach prescribed courses of study with established texts.
  • Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in TESOL/TESL, Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or equivalent OR a master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in TESOL/TESL, Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, or equivalent.
  • Qualifying academic degrees and coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
  • For degrees earned outside the United States, a course-by-course international credential evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member is required.

Pay

Adjunct faculty teaching ESL are paid per credit hour based on rank:

  • Instructor: $935 per credit hour
  • Assistant Professor: $1,047 per credit hour
  • Associate Professor: $1,160 per credit hour
  • Professor: $1,249 per credit hour

Schedule

Varies according to class schedules. Adjunct faculty may teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and/or up to 8 credit hours during the summer session.
