The Penn State Berks Composition Program is seeking qualified part-time instructors for their first-year writing courses. The successful candidate will:

  • Plan and teach one to three in-person course sections (three to nine credits) per semester
  • Follow best practices for teaching English Composition
  • Work effectively with diverse populations and audiences
  • Hold at least one office hour per three credits taught
  • Grade student work (with limited assistance from artificial intelligence)
  • Submit student progress evaluations at least twice during the semester
  • Respond to administration and student emails
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Effectively use the Penn State learning management system (Canvas)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of all requirements for the M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field with degree awarded by the start date of employment
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education in writing studies, rhetoric, and composition
  • Experience teaching students with a variety of needs and experiences
  • Commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in higher education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D in Rhetoric/Composition or closely related field
  • Experience teaching advanced writing and/or writing in the disciplines, particularly technical writing
  • Experience teaching multimodal composition and integrating various educational technologies
  • Interest and experience in community-based writing

Campus Security Crime Statistics: Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters. The ASR is available for review here.
