Adjunct, English

Elmhurst University seeks part-time faculty to join the vibrant professional teaching and learning community in First-Year Writing during fall term 2026. All first-year writing courses meet in person in computer-assisted writing labs. Enrollment is generally capped at 18 students.

Position Status: Exempt

Responsibilities

• Teach 1 to 3 sections of Composition I and/or II, including in-person instruction and regular assessment of student learning outcomes
• Teach ENG 200: Introduction to Literature, pending availability
• Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
• Course preparation including syllabus development
• Grading and availability to students who have questions or require extra help
• Support the mission, vision, and values of Elmhurst University
• Perform other teaching-related duties as assigned

Requirements

• M.A. in English or comparable degree
• Experience teaching first-year composition or other introductory writing course
• Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student body and contributing positively to an inclusive campus community
• Training or background in contemporary rhetoric and composition pedagogy (preferred)
• Experience teaching undergraduates (preferred)

Working Conditions

• Primarily performed in an indoor setting with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions
• Work is often sedentary, requiring remaining in a stationary position for extended periods
• Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills
• May require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds

Pay

The pay range is $3,800-$4,000 for a standard 1.0 credit (4 semester hour) course. New part-time faculty start at $3,800 (Adjunct Level 1).
