Adjunct, Construction Management

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment. New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date.

About the Role

Under general supervision, teach various adjunct Construction Management courses which will lead students to acquire specific skills, and Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. This is a pooled position; the department reviews applications as positions become available. Adjunct positions are offered on a semester-by-semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.

Courses

• Construction Material and Methods (CMGT 1010) – Provides students with knowledge of building techniques and materials. Examines common construction materials, components, and systems related to wood frame structures, utilizing sustainable building practices. Analyzes the construction process from site planning to finish construction.
• OSHA 30 for Construction (CMGT 1130) – In-depth study of OSHA safety practices and its role in the construction industry. Reviews workers' safety procedures and practices. Attendance is required to be eligible for OSHA 30 completion card.
• Construction Print Reading and Layout (CMGT 1450) – Study of print reading as it pertains to today’s high-tech industry. Includes architectural symbols and terms, relationship of views, sections, electrical and mechanical systems, and diagrams. Examines residential and commercial plans and the use of electronic files such as PDF & DWG.
• Construction Estimating (CMGT 2640) – Introduction to material take-offs, labor cost estimates, equipment costs, price extensions, and competitive bidding. Discusses various building systems and evaluates formulas using software like Microsoft Excel for computerized estimating and takeoffs.
• Construction Systems and Standards (CMGT 2820) – Introduction to energy systems for commercial and residential construction, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, solar, and alternative energy systems. Studies the application and effect on the building envelope and air quality, along with current Green Building Standards such as LEED and Energy Star.

Responsibilities

• Effectively prepare and teach classes to facilitate student learning.
• Assess student performance and maintain student records.
• Develop, distribute, and adhere to current course outlines and/or syllabi.
• Demonstrate and support professional commitment to Division, School, and College mission and values.
• Maintain currency in the theory and practice of Construction Management and Sustainable Building.
• Abide by all college policies, with immediate priority given to those governing interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments.
• Maintain professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
• Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments; return graded assignments per department standards.
• Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
• Conduct evaluations of student performance and assign/submit grades by published deadlines.
• Inform students of progress-to-date periodically.
• Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
• Prepare and submit incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
• Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints and respond to student communications promptly (generally within 1-2 days).
• Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
• Complete all required employee trainings.
• Know and enforce FERPA guidelines; provide ADA accommodations as requested.
• Maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences unless approved for online-only courses.

Requirements

• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
• Minimum of eight (8) full-time years of paid construction work experience, or six (6) full-time years of paid construction work experience and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, or four (4) full-time years of paid construction work experience and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Degree must be in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• General Building Contractor’s License.
• Experience and certifications related to specific classes being taught, such as:
  • LEED certification
  • National Association of Home Builders Certified Green Professional
  • OSHA Certification
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field from an accredited College or University.
• Two (2) years of post-secondary teaching experience in Construction Management, Sustainable Building, or a related field.
• Proven experience in estimating construction projects.
• Supervisory field management experience from start to finish on three or more custom homes or equivalent experience on commercial construction projects.
