Adjunct Assistant Professor - First Year Experience Course

About the role

Farmingdale State College is seeking adjunct faculty to teach FYE 101, a First-Year Experience course that is now a graduation requirement for all first-time freshmen. Research demonstrates that these courses enhance students’ academic and social integration, leading to higher retention, improved GPAs, reduced failure rates, stronger faculty interaction, greater use of support services, and better emotional well-being. The course follows a standard syllabus and curriculum with some flexibility for individual lesson planning.

Course description

FYE 101 is designed to help new students acclimate, connect, and adjust to college life. Through presentations, discussions, and group work, students will:

• Become familiar with campus resources and academic-success strategies
• Explore the College’s values and ethical principles
• Reflect on their roles and responsibilities as college students

Key topics include time management, study skills, stress management, goal setting, course and career planning, self-assessment, wellness strategies, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Develop connections with peers and campus professionals at Farmingdale State College
• Identify campus resources that support academic success
• Apply effective goal-setting skills tailored to their individual learning styles
• Employ time-management techniques to balance coursework across classes
• Implement effective study skills in their courses
• Use techniques that reduce stress and improve emotional regulation
• Explore identity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice through an intersectional lens, becoming respectful and responsible members of the academic community

Course modules

• Module 1: Introduction to College Skills – Goal setting, study skills, time management, and course planning
• Module 2: Wellness – Emotional intelligence, growth mindset, and mindfulness
• Module 3: Campus Services – Library, student life, extracurriculars, financial literacy, and career exploration
• Module 4: Introduction to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice – Intersectionality, recognizing and valuing differences

Responsibilities

• Teach FYE 101 in-person using the provided standard syllabus and curriculum
• Develop lesson plans while adhering to core content requirements
• Foster student engagement through presentations, discussions, and group work
• Support students in achieving the course’s learning objectives

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in your field of study
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience
• Availability to teach in-person (this course is not offered in a distance-learning format)
• Experience working within a college-related setting
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational settings

Preferred qualifications

• Master’s degree in your field of study
• Experience teaching first-year seminar or similar student-success courses
• Knowledge of first-year student development theory and transition issues
• Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace) and classroom technology
• Commitment to diversity initiatives and student-centered service activities
• Interest in promoting civic engagement with the College’s community partners
