Addictions Counselor 2 (McPike ATC) (NY HELPS)

Responsibilities

  • Gathers medical necessity documentation and communicates with insurance companies to secure authorizations for treatment.
  • Communicates with insurance companies and completes required concurrent review actions.
  • Completes retroactive insurance authorizations.
  • Manages all appeals.
  • Coordinates with the clinical team to gather documentation for authorizations and reviews.
  • Attends bi‑weekly agency wide revenue meetings.
  • Authors data reports as needed.
  • Works with private insurance companies to determine ASAM level of care.
  • Admission determination, admission interviews, outreach activities, scheduling, etc.
  • Communicates with insurance companies to obtain both preauthorization and concurrent reviews to obtain payment for treatment.
  • Functions as member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Authors procedurally correct patient records including justification for continued stay and progress toward meeting treatment goals.
  • Daily documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Accepts referrals from community‑based referral sources and accepts self‑referrals.
  • Contacts referral source when a referral is made to thank the agency for the referral and provide a tentative date for admission interview as appropriate.
  • Schedules admissions based on scheduled discharges and open bed capacity.
  • Manages the waiting list – maintains contact with all prospective patients and/or referral source to ensure patient safety and coordinate services to meet prospective patient needs prior to admission; documents all contacts in Avatar; reports on waiting list status in Leadership meetings.
  • Provides report on daily admissions scheduled for morning treatment team meeting.
  • Greets all new admissions with a welcoming and supportive attitude and meets initial patient needs as appropriate.
  • Completes the LOCADTR on new admissions.
  • Completes accurate and timely data entry of admission information at the time of admission.
  • Works with physicians, nurses, resource agent, and psychologist, relaying areas of concern on newly admitted patients.
  • Completes case management duties as assigned.
  • Completes other job‑related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently employed as an Addictions Counselor 2.
  • Current registration as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Advanced Counselor (CASAC‑Advanced) or Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Master Counselor (CASAC‑Master) in NYS AND one‑year post‑CASAC professional counseling experience.
  • Eligible for transfer.
  • HELPS Program eligible.
  • Position may be designated 55 b/c, subject to verification of applicant eligibility.
  • Must possess current registration as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) in New York State.
  • Must be eligible and maintain eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
  • Failure to maintain certification and Medicaid/Medicare eligibility will result in termination of employment.
  • Mandatory overtime (MOT) is a requirement; chosen candidate(s) will be added to the mandatory overtime roster, utilized on a rotating basis during emergencies after other staffing options are exhausted; ATCs operate 24/7/365, making MOT an essential function for client health and safety.
  • Appointment status will be discussed in more detail with candidates under serious consideration.
  • Potential non‑competitive appointment via the HELPS program; additional HELPS program information will be provided if applicable.
