About the role
The Financial Times is seeking a New York-based Executive Producer for a six-month fixed-term contract to join our award-winning Audio team. You’ll work across two flagship podcasts: FT News Briefing (daily news show) and Unhedged (twice-weekly markets podcast). This role involves shaping editorial direction, ensuring high production standards, and responding to breaking news. You’ll collaborate with hosts, producers, and the FT’s global network of reporters and editors to deliver authoritative, engaging journalism on business, finance, and world affairs. The role also includes identifying opportunities to grow audiences across podcast platforms, social media, and YouTube.
Responsibilities
- Lead editorial planning and daily output for FT News Briefing, including running morning editorial meetings and overseeing scripts and audio production.
- Attend newsroom conferences and collaborate with editors to identify the day’s most important stories.
- Provide editorial guidance and feedback to hosts and producers throughout production.
- Coordinate legal review to ensure content meets editorial and legal standards.
- Respond quickly to breaking news by reshaping program line-ups and sourcing new contributors.
- Build relationships across the newsroom to identify exclusive stories, features, and future coverage opportunities.
- Partner with marketing and social media teams to maximize audience engagement.
- Oversee editorial planning, recordings, and final edits for Unhedged, including approving episodes and supporting social content.
- Edit show notes and manage publication workflows for both podcasts.
Skills
- Strong editorial judgment and instinct for identifying stories that matter to FT audiences.
- Ability to write, edit, and shape clear, compelling editorial content (audio script experience is valuable but not required).
- Editorial leadership skills, including managing competing priorities and making decisions under tight deadlines.
- Understanding of FT journalism, editorial standards, and audience needs.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to build relationships with presenters, producers, reporters, and editors.
- Confidence with digital production tools and ability to learn new systems quickly (experience with digital audio workstations or Descript is useful).
- Interest in business, finance, or markets journalism (existing knowledge is beneficial but not essential).
- Understanding of how journalism can engage audiences beyond its primary format (podcasts, social media, YouTube).
- Proactive approach to generating ideas that strengthen journalism and grow audience engagement.
Colleagues with experience in editorial, production, digital publishing, audience engagement, or roles involving strong editorial decision-making and storytelling are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate these transferable skills.
