About the role
The Deputy Legal Director supports the Legal Director in overseeing the legal program of the ACLU of Montana. This role involves managing litigation, legal advocacy, and policy work to protect and advance civil liberties and civil rights across the state.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and mentor legal staff, including attorneys and paralegals
- Manage a docket of impact litigation, including complex federal and state court cases
- Develop and implement legal strategies in coordination with the Legal Director
- Engage in legislative and policy advocacy on civil liberties issues
- Oversee intake and review of potential cases and legal inquiries
- Collaborate with other ACLU departments and external partners on advocacy campaigns
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Active membership in good standing in the Montana State Bar or eligibility for admission promptly upon hire
- Minimum of 5 years of litigation experience, including significant federal court experience
- Demonstrated commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice
- Proven supervisory or management experience in a legal setting
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
Qualifications
- Experience with impact or class-action litigation
- Knowledge of Montana state and federal law and procedure
- Familiarity with a broad range of civil liberties issues, including First Amendment, due process, equal protection, and privacy rights
- Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with diverse communities and stakeholders
- Strong organizational and case-management abilities
Pay
Salary range: $95,000–$115,000 annually, depending on experience.

Full-time, exempt position based in Missoula, Montana, with occasional travel and some flexibility for remote work as approved.
