Accounting Technician III - Sheriff's Office (0826)
About the Role
Under limited supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in advanced accounting, financial, and payroll support. Duties include financial transactions, preparing account reconciliations, processing journal entries, reconciling bank and general ledger accounts, developing financial reports, and verifying budgetary and fiscal documentation.
Responsibilities
- Leads accounting support activities, including review and verification of accounting documentation for accuracy, coding, and adherence to policies.
- Provides accounting support in payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, and/or special districts.
- Prepares, maintains, and reconciles accounting, financial, and departmental records.
- Audits projected revenues and expenditures; verifies transactions and reconciles discrepancies.
- Responds to information requests related to assigned areas; interacts frequently with employees, agencies, and the public to resolve complex accounting issues.
- Verifies the work of other accounting support staff; trains less experienced personnel.
- Supports external audits; may effect collections of fines and fees, prepare invoices, or audit travel claims for compliance.
- May handle and account for cash; prepare and perform check runs; supervise bookkeeping or clerical staff.
Essential functions: Sitting for computer work, working with staff and outside agencies, handling interruptions, repetitive motion (typing, writing, calculator use), near/far vision acuity, color vision, hearing and speech for communication, finger dexterity for typing/10-key.
Requirements
- Four years of increasingly responsible accounting experience; OR
- Associate’s degree in accounting, economics, or business plus three years of accounting experience; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, economics, or business plus two years of accounting experience; OR
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- Accounting and payroll experience.
- Customer service experience and ability to work well on a team.
- Governmental accounting experience, strong communication skills, and grant writing experience.
This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Knowledge of:
- Governmental accounting principles and practices.
- Automated accounting systems, file maintenance, and data entry procedures.
- County policies, statutes, and guidelines related to assigned areas.
- Office practices and principles of supervision.

- Performing and verifying mathematical computations.
