Full-time, 40 hours per week. Located in Hartford, CT with a Monday - Friday schedule. This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, in accordance with the Telework Policy. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office.

About the role

The Accounting Careers Trainee will report to and work closely with the Contribution and Compliance Manager. Under the direction of the Contribution and Compliance Manager, the trainee will work with Authority staff, vendor partners, and other state agencies to support the contribution collection system, ensuring the ongoing solvency of the program. The trainee program introduces the candidate to a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-focused environment, providing experience in reconciliation and auditing various payroll records to ensure compliance with statutory obligations.

As an Accounting Careers Trainee, you will be part of a 1- or 2-year training program depending on your level of education:

  • 2 years for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting.
  • 1 year for individuals with a master’s degree in accounting or a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting.
  • 1 year from the date the master’s degree is conferred for individuals who earn a master’s degree in accounting or a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification, or the end of the original 2-year training period, whichever comes first.

This role offers a career progression pathway within the State of Connecticut, starting as Accounting Careers Trainee, advancing to Accounts Examiner, then Associate Accounts Examiner, and culminating in Supervising Accounts Examiner.

Responsibilities

  • Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work to develop skills and knowledge for advancement into a professional accounting or auditing position.
  • Performs increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the training period.
  • Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines, or accepted accounting principles.
  • Receives training in maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices; business mathematics and statistics; business uses of information technology; and effective report writing.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials and utilize computer software.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Hiring rates based on education and experience:

  • Completion of 1 year of training: $67,460/year
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 15 semester hours in accounting and/or qualifying experience: $70,542/year
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 30 semester hours in accounting: $69,521/year rising to $72,661/year
  • Master’s degree in a related field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting: $71,606/year rising to $74,843/year

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or coursework using mathematical and analytical skills to reconcile accounts or identify discrepancies.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience or coursework involving audits and risk principles.
  • Experience or coursework in writing a financial report.
  • Experience or coursework where teamwork and collaboration were necessary.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel including creating and developing spreadsheets, using macros, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and importing and exporting data.
  • Experience working remotely.

About Us

The CT Paid Leave Authority is a quasi-public state agency administering Connecticut’s Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program. This program provides Connecticut workers access to income replacement benefits when out of work for life events covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, the Connecticut Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Connecticut Family Violence Leave Act. The program is funded through payroll deductions (contributions) remitted to the Authority by employers quarterly. The Authority’s mission is to help Connecticut’s workforce navigate health challenges and life changes with greater financial security by making benefit payments to eligible workers who need to take leave from work to care for themselves or a family member.
