About the role
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) accounting work. Work involves preparing financial statements, records, documents, and reports. May specialize in some phase of accounting work such as general ledger, property and equipment control, expense reconciliation, appropriation accounting and control, and bank reconciliations. May train others. Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Accounting.
Responsibilities
- Reconciles accounts, bank statements, and appropriation balances; researches reconciliation discrepancies and reports findings.
- Prepares and/or processes general journal entries and related vouchers.
- Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial and accounting documents and records.
- Audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures and state statutes.
- Prepares letters of instruction for daily presentments, and daily reimbursement of the prize payment account.
- Prepares financial statements including exhibits, notes, schedules, and reports.
- Maintains adequate records of expenditures, funds, appropriations, expenses, revenue collected, and deposits.
- Assists in making recommendations for improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures.
- Provides technical assistance to staff performing accounting transactions.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration is required. (Experience in accounting or financial operations, in excess of the required two years, may be substituted for college on a year-for-year basis.)
- Two years of experience in accounting or financial operations is required.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word is required.
- Must be willing to work extra hours (evenings, weekends, and holidays) as workload may require.
