Accountant II
About the role
The City of Fort Collins is seeking an Accountant II to join our Finance department. This is a full time salaried position with the City with an anticipated hiring salary range of $71,000-$87,000 a year!
Responsibilities
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.
- Prepares month-end and year-end related work papers and reconciliations.
- Continually improves the year-end financial close by creating documented procedures.
- Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, fund balance, revenues, and expenditures, and prepares governmental financial statements and other reports to summarize historical and projected financial position.
- Documents and coordinates implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures.
- Devises and implements systems for general accounting, budgetary monitoring and control, and financial reporting.
- Advises departments regarding accounting procedures, and other financial matters.
- Provides information to external auditors regarding the City's annual statements.
- Maintains accounting and financial reporting systems to ensure viability and integrity of financial information.
- Reviews, investigates and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents and reports.
- Guides the administration of specific division or city organization projects.
- Performs special work projects including planning, design and implementation.
Requirements
- College degree or equivalent work experience.
- Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees.
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or closely related field.
- At least 3 - 5 years of successful accounting experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of municipal government accounting principles (GASB standards, GFOA guidance, and/or various interpretations); ability to create and interpret financial statements like balance sheets and income statements.
Possess critical thinking, analytical thought process and business acumen.
Able to effectively manage multiple projects with limited guidance and various priorities.
Intermediate / Advanced skill level in and Microsoft Office software such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Able to effectively summarize and communicate accounting issues, complex problems and analytics, both orally and in writing to peers and management.
Able to research and interpret new accounting standards or practice guides and recommend implementation approach to peers and management.
Intermediate / Advanced data query, extraction, and normalizing skills.
Proficient at incorporating and utilizing data in a variety of reporting tools and financial software packages.
Able to communicate and influence effectively at all levels of staff including peers and management.
Direct experience with ERP computer system technology, preferably Tier 1 platforms.
