ACCOUNTANT I / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENTS HOMELESSNESS

This examination will remain open until the needs of the service are met and is subject to closure without prior notice. The LA County Board of Supervisors has declared a local state of emergency for homelessness, and the County is expanding its response to address housing, mental health, and substance use challenges. The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates for emergency Accountant I vacancies related to the homelessness crisis. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment based on work performance assessment.

About the Role

The Accountant I position performs a wide variety of accounting assignments within the annual accounting cycle, including setup and maintenance of accounting records, transaction classification, trial balance, closing, and end-of-period adjustments. This role supports the Department of Mental Health’s financial operations during the homelessness crisis response.

Responsibilities

• Perform accounts payable, accounts receivable, and capital asset accounting.
• Compile, analyze, and reconcile financial transactions, statements, and reports.
• Assist in preparing complex accounting reports and schedules, including statements of revenue and balance sheets.
• Conduct cost surveys, revenue analyses, and other accounting studies; participate in writing reports of findings.
• Assist in studying, developing, and installing modifications to departmental accounting systems.
• Audit grant-related expenditures for appropriate use and coding; compile expenditure data and reports.
• Research and define accounting requirements of laws and regulations.

Requirements

• Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree or higher, including 21 semester or 32 quarter units of accounting. Official transcripts or diploma must be submitted with the application.
• License: A valid California Class C Driver’s License or the ability to use alternative transportation for job-related essential functions.
• Physical Requirements: Physical Class II – Light: Occasional light lifting (up to 10 pounds), bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Additional Information

During the initial 90-day work period, performance will be assessed for potential permanent appointment. Accredited institutions include those recognized by regional, national, or international accrediting agencies or evaluated by NACES or AICE. Password-protected documents will not be accepted.
