Accountant - Entry Level

About the role

We are looking for an entry-level accounting team member to join a nonprofit organization in New York, New York as part of the budget team. This contract opportunity with potential for a permanent position is well suited for someone who wants to build hands-on experience supporting financial operations, budget tracking, and day-to-day accounting activities. The role offers exposure to expense management, reporting support, and spreadsheet-based analysis in a mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Support the budget team with routine accounting tasks, including reviewing financial data and maintaining accurate records.
• Process and verify expense reports to ensure completeness, policy compliance, and timely follow-up on discrepancies.
• Assist with budget monitoring by updating spreadsheets, organizing forecast information, and tracking variances.
• Use Microsoft Excel to prepare reports, reconcile data, and summarize financial information for internal review.
• Coordinate with internal staff to gather documentation, clarify transaction details, and support month-to-month accounting activities.
• Help maintain organized financial files and contribute to accurate reporting for ongoing departmental needs.

Requirements

• Entry-level experience or academic background in accounting, finance, or a related discipline.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to organize, calculate, and analyze financial information.
• Experience handling or reviewing expense reports with strong attention to detail.
• Familiarity with budgeting and forecasting concepts in a work or academic setting.
• Solid written and verbal communication skills for working with internal stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, stay organized, and meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment.
