Accountant
About the Role
Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is seeking an accounting professional to ensure timely and accurate preparation and reporting of accounting information to management, investors, and regulatory bodies. This role supports the company’s mission to provide clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to over 192,000 customers across 23 southeast Mississippi counties.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly journal entries and financial statements.
- Respond to regulatory data requests, cost-of-service studies, and associated inquiries.
- Reconcile account balances to the general ledger.
- Monitor accounting information and internal controls to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for assigned accounting areas, resolving control and process issues while applying accounting and system knowledge to support company personnel.
- Assist company personnel in resolving accounting problems and conduct training on accounting concepts, systems, and procedures.
- Perform assigned "storm duty" in the event of a disaster.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required).
- Advanced degree or certification (desired).
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel skills preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines.
- Must currently live in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area or be willing to relocate.
