This role is hybrid, based in either Columbus, Ohio or Charleston, West Virginia. Encova can hire at multiple seniority levels; the posted range covers both the Accountant, Operations and Intermediate roles.

About the role

The Accountant, Operations supports financial reporting, reconciliations, cash management, and expense administration. Strong preference is given to candidates with Concur experience, including administration, auditing, and employee support. This role directly impacts financial accuracy, controls, and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger entries.
  • Analyze and maintain accounting records; perform account reconciliations.
  • Research and resolve issues to ensure accuracy of financial information.
  • Participate in projects to maintain key departmental controls.
  • Ensure proper recording and reporting based on statutory accounting principles.
  • Develop understanding of compliance and statutory rules; assist with research, analysis, and implementation of process changes.
  • Identify potential problems, inefficiencies, or risks; collaborate with senior staff to resolve them.
  • Perform daily analysis and journal entries for operating cash accounts; generate cash-flow reporting for management.
  • Administer, maintain, review, and audit employee expense reports and the core system.
  • Prepare journal entries, payroll and fleet reporting, monthly account reconciliations, and other reporting.
  • Understand and apply rules, regulations, and procedures for systematic work handling.
  • Perform account reconciliations for assigned asset, liability, and expense accounts to ensure accuracy and safeguard company assets.
  • Run and modify existing reports from financial systems (core insurance system, general ledger, business objects, and other data access points).
  • Prepare and record journal entries with supporting computations; assist other areas with this function.
  • Complete selected elements of the month-end close process.
  • Review and prepare specific supplementary reporting.
  • Review, maintain, and approve all vendor records in accordance with established procedures and controls.
  • Identify potential issues and exceptions in cash processes and reporting; collaborate with other areas to resolve them.
  • Assist with PBC items for the company’s annual audit.
  • Identify areas of inefficiency to streamline results.
  • Participate in specialized project teams to achieve accounting department goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree with a major in accounting or finance preferred.
  • Interest in progressing toward CPA preferred, though not required.
  • Ability to learn and understand Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP).
  • Familiarity with software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Ability to use technical tools to perform analysis and create reporting efficiencies.
  • Ability to understand and access various data sources using available reporting tools to meet compliance, accounting, and operational reporting needs.
  • Strong teamwork skills, ability to learn new technology, good oral and written communication skills, and a profit-minded perspective.
