AccessABLE Rec. Program Assistant
About the Role
This is a temporary/seasonal position that supports individuals with intellectual, developmental, and/or physical disabilities in various recreation programs. AccessABLE Recreation Program Assistants will assist and engage with participants in activities such as exercise, arts, crafts, games, music, swim, and more.
The position includes work in the following programs:
- After-School/Afternoon programs – Primarily serves children and young adults. Schedule: Monday-Friday during the school year. No work on non-school days.
- A Meaningful Day – Recreational day program for adults. Schedule: Hours vary Monday-Friday from 11 AM - 2 PM.
- Seasonal and Special Events – Hours vary based on program offerings.
The City of Rochester will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position, including F1 OPT STEM.
Responsibilities
- Assist in delivering an engaging and supportive recreation program.
- Engage, interact, and encourage participants in activities.
- Assist participants with personal care, as needed.
- Ensure proper use of equipment, facilities, property, and supplies.
- Follow behavioral, communication, and medical plans of each participant.
- Follow directions, employment policies, and protocols.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Physically capable of participating in a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with recreation programming or similar work.
- Experience or interest in working with people who have developmental, intellectual, and/or physical disabilities.
- Background or interest in special education, recreation therapy, human services, or related field.
Physical and Environmental Criteria
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represents the physical and environmental demands for this position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions with or without accommodation.
The work is best described as Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical demands may include:
- Continuous demands (2/3 or more of the time): sitting, standing, walking, fine dexterity, handling.
- Frequent demands (1/3 to 2/3 of the time): lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching.
- Occasional demands (up to 1/3 of the time): kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting.
Sensory requirements include sight, hearing, and touch.
Environmental conditions may include:
- Extreme heat (above 100 degrees).
- Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather).
