Access Specialist

About the role

You’ll be joining the Services for Students with Disabilities team, a department centered on promoting students' academic success, personal growth, and life-skill development by ensuring that students with disabilities receive equal access to Virginia Tech programs, activities, and services. You’ll report to the assistant director of access and accommodations in a regular twelve-month, 100% administrative professional appointment.

You’ll be responsible for providing direct services to students and families seeking disability accommodations using an interactive process that identifies reasonable accommodations as well as auxiliary aids and services. You’ll have the chance to grow and take advantage of a developmental plan with opportunities to advance within the department and the division.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent amount of experience working in disability services in higher education
• Experience communicating effectively with multiple stakeholders
• Experience working in the field of disability services, rehabilitation services, social work, higher education, etc.
• Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple requests and competing deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience providing individual and/or small group instruction to students
• Demonstrated ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience working with students individually or as a group to learn new skills
• Experience translating legal requirements into actionable steps for both experts and non-experts

Schedule

40 hours per week

Overtime status: Exempt (not eligible for overtime)

Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) strives to create an accessible and inclusive campus community. We collaborate with campus partners to remove barriers and meet the individualized access needs of disabled students. SSD supports success through the promotion of student learning and the development of advocacy skills.
