About the role

The Access Control Technician I will install, maintain, and repair a variety of security and access systems, including door hardware, keys, combination and electronically operated locks, and hardware. This role operates in a service-oriented environment, requiring effective communication with members of the Dartmouth community while performing tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Installs new locks and door hardware on interior and exterior doors, file cabinets, and equipment casings as part of new construction and remodeling projects, including determining appropriate keying to meet end users’ needs.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, and maintains existing door hardware (electronic or mechanical), including door closers, ADA operators, and disassembling locks to replace worn parts.
  • Bypasses (“picks”) locks as required using industry standards.
  • Cuts and issues new keys to authorized personnel.
  • Installs, pins, maintains, and repairs mechanical and electrified locks.
  • Rekeys locks and changes locker combinations for security purposes.
  • Plans, coordinates, and executes approximately 2,500 lock changes annually for student dorm rooms.
  • Plans and installs key systems in accordance with Access Control Shop practices for master key systems; maintains accurate records of all keys, locks, and security devices.
  • Maintains inventory records of hardware supplies and tools; assists in preparing purchase requisitions.
  • Follows schematics, wiring diagrams, or blueprints for equipment and systems.
  • Reviews drawings and plans, recommending appropriate security devices across campus.
  • Enters data into the access control system and performs electronic door access control programming.
  • Assists in testing and maintaining access control and alarm intrusion systems.
  • Coordinates installations with the Department of Safety & Security (DOSS), departments, and various maintenance trades.
  • Determines work methods for repairs, replacements, or new installations.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with constituents.
  • Pursues and maintains knowledge of applicable codes and manufacturer training for the college’s access control systems (e.g., Lenel, CBORD).
  • Learns from senior technicians by observing and assisting in maintenance, repair, and problem diagnosis.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, collegiality, and commitment to inclusion and cultural awareness in interactions.
  • Participates in division-wide cultural and employee belonging (CEB) initiatives and training, promoting the 7 Principles (Empathy, Fairness, Dependability, Inclusivity, Consideration, Vulnerability, and Respect).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Technical school graduate or equivalent educational and vocational experience.
  • At least three years of relevant experience, with two years served as an apprentice or equivalent position.
  • Valid driver’s license and qualification under Dartmouth College’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Working knowledge of and demonstrated skills in installing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical locking systems.
  • Awareness of electronic lock systems and access control systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes: NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), NFPA 80 (Standard for Fire Doors), International Building Code (IBC), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and hardware schedules.
  • General knowledge of College Construction Guidelines.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, analog/digital test equipment, man lifts, testing devices, and ladders.
  • Ability to follow complex written and oral assignments and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and solve problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills with laptops, tablets, smartphones, and Microsoft Office software.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Completion of the following training prior to performing related work:
    • Electrical safety-related work practices
    • Lock-out/tag-out
    • Respirator training
    • Fit and physical examination
    • Fall protection
    • Working in confined spaces
    • Laboratory safety/hazardous waste management
    • Asbestos awareness
    • Bloodborne pathogen training
    • EPA R.R.P. Lead Training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills in troubleshooting door hardware and locks.
  • Experience with access control systems.

Working Conditions

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and platforms.
  • Requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions.
  • Involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing up to 120 pounds.
  • Performed indoors and outdoors, in harsh weather, dirty or smoky areas, and underground manholes.
  • Exposure to cuts, bruises, and potential injuries from working on ladders or scaffolds.
  • Requires wearing protective clothing such as gloves, goggles, ear plugs, aprons, or overalls.
  • Work environments include:

Pay

$36.94 per hour.

Schedule

  • Full-time, regular position (12 months per year).
  • 40 hours per week.
  • Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM; Saturday–Sunday off.
