About the role

Mid‑Career Academic Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon joining the Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery, Department of Surgery at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple (flagship hospital in Temple, TX). The position offers privileges at an American College of Surgeons‑verified, state‑designated Level I Trauma facility serving over 3,000 trauma registry patients per year. Candidates must be board‑certified/board‑eligible in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical evaluation of all trauma and emergency general surgery consults.
  • Rounding for the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) and Trauma Acute Care Surgery services.
  • Operating‑room coverage for trauma, emergency general surgery, and elective general surgery cases.
  • Delivering academic lectures to residents and medical students on all aspects of Acute Care Surgery.
  • Mentoring residents, medical students, and APP students; serving as ATLS, ATOM, and ASSET instructor.
  • Leading research and principal‑investigator projects across the three pillars of Acute Care Surgery.
  • Participating in regional outreach and maintaining commitment to trauma and emergency surgical services.
  • Involvement in TQIP and NSQIP initiatives.
  • Early leadership opportunities within the division.
  • Providing 24‑hour, 365‑day coverage with dedicated call rooms.
  • Utilizing a dedicated OR suite for Trauma & Acute Care Surgery.
  • Working in an established Surgical & Trauma Intensive Care Unit.
  • Performing laparoscopic or robotic surgery (required).
  • Collaborating with Baylor College of Medicine and a large general surgery residency program with continuous resident coverage.
  • Managing a Geriatric Trauma Service supported by a full complement of APPs.
  • Participating in in‑house trauma call rotations.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree.
  • Fellowship training in Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, or Acute Care Surgery.
  • Board certification (or board‑eligible status) by the American Board of Surgery or the Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
  • 5–10 years of post‑fellowship clinical experience (optimal).
  • Academic rank of Associate Professor or equivalent (optimal).
  • Active Texas medical license.
  • Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (when qualified).
  • ATLS instructor qualification preferred.
  • Extensive experience with surgical care of trauma, emergency general surgery, and critical care patients.

Schedule
