Academic Specialist - Math & Literacy Tutor
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Academic Director, the Math & Literacy Tutor is responsible for leading focused academic tutoring sessions and enrichment activities for youth in YMCA After School Programs. With the goal of fostering mathematical achievement and confidence, the Math & Literacy Tutor will develop and implement lesson plans tailored to support and supplement schoolwide efforts in mathematics.
Job Responsibilities
- Plan and implement engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans for elementary school students (K-5th) to strengthen math/reading skills and confidence.
- Provide individualized and group tutoring support to meet diverse learning needs and promote academic growth.
- Design and facilitate academic-focused enrichment activities that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and a positive attitude toward learning.
- Create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters participation and self-confidence in mathematics and reading.
- Incorporate Youth Development Principles into activities to support students’ social, emotional and academic development.
- Follow YMCA policies and safety guidelines during all tutoring sessions and activities.
- Maintain an organized and clean learning space to ensure a productive environment.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to improve teaching practices.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor to support program goals.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
The Math & Literacy Tutors work in dynamic classroom settings that may include both indoor and outdoor spaces, engaging in activities that require moderate physical activity, such as standing, walking, and interacting with students. The role requires the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment, maintain a positive and engaging demeanor, and meet the physical demands of teaching and supervision, including handling classroom materials and technology.

Salary Description
The hourly rate for the Academic Tutor position ranges from $30.00 to $33.00 per hour, based on experience, qualifications, and alignment with industry salary benchmarks. This rate is determined in accordance with grant funding approvals and organizational compensation guidelines, ensuring equity and competitiveness within the field.
