About the role
The Sitka AmeriCorps Program works to address the high rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in rural Alaska by fostering strong developmental relationships with youth. Members support this mission through enrichment activities, academic assistance, mentoring, mental health support, and capacity building efforts.
Responsibilities
- Serve 36–40 hours per week in roles such as tutors, mentors, outreach workers, and community organizers.
- Support boarding students through academic tutoring, mentoring, social-emotional guidance, and enrichment that strengthens school connectedness.
- Supplement—not replace—school staff and require flexibility, communication, and responsiveness to student needs.
- Support students identified as academically or socially struggling, develop targeted interventions, build relationships with students and families, and participate in school meetings.
- Tutor, help with study skills and organization, assist with credit recovery, supervise academic spaces, maintain materials, offer afterschool support, and wear an AmeriCorps uniform.
- Receive 2–4 weeks of onboarding, ongoing supervision, and may serve with Parks & Recreation in summer programming.
Requirements
Members commit to a full term of service, with preference for local applicants. Leadership development is integral and includes training in self leadership, conflict resolution, and effective service delivery. Members primarily travel by foot, bicycle, or public transit.
Qualifications
- Strong communication skills—and appropriate gear for local weather—are essential for a positive service experience.
- Successful members communicate well with staff, adapt to changing needs, and maintain a collaborative, supportive approach.
