About the role

The Academic Retention Specialist works closely with University Advising Services, Student Support Services, Counseling and Mental Health Center, and other departments to ensure students receive the support needed for academic success and degree completion. This role also facilitates workshops, orientation activities, and other retention initiatives as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with students on a monthly basis to monitor academic progress
  • Assess and coordinate academic tutoring opportunities for students
  • Oversee daily study tables and organize study sessions
  • Guide and mentor students in exploring their choices of majors and coursework
  • Advise students on personal, financial, social, and academic matters
  • Research and assist with scholarship and internship opportunities
  • Collaborate with university resources and personnel to provide comprehensive support services

Requirements

  • Balancing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Working with students in an advising and mentoring role
  • Editing and writing business correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials
  • Explaining policies and procedures to others
  • Using computer software and applications for work processing, email, internet research, and social media engagement
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality in an environment
  • Working in a team to accomplish shared goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration, business, public administration, or a related field
  • One or more years of experience organizing, coordinating, and managing academic retention programs
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with an ability to interface professionally with departments, staff, faculty, and students
  • Experience in researching, interpreting, and applying university policies and procedures demonstrating considerable knowledge of academic issues and graduation requirements
  • Experience in office management and record keeping

  • Salary range: $49,816 or higher depending on experience
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
  • Employee Category: Exempt
  • Type of Appointment: Fiscal Year Fte 1.0 Full Time
