UMKC’s Division of Student Success is hiring an Academic Advisor for the Roo Advising Team, a centralized, proactive advising model that guides students through their chosen degree programs to graduation. This position is specifically assigned to the Numbers, Engineering, Technology & the Cosmos Major Academic Path (MAP), advising students in Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Information Technology, Mathematics & Statistics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, and Urban Planning and Design.

About the role

The successful applicant will build strong advisor-student relationships, provide proactive guidance, and support students in making informed academic and career choices. The role requires a commitment to professional development and upholding UMKC’s Culture of Care and Statement of Values in all interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop advising relationships that support students’ interests, values, skills, and career aspirations
  • Manage a caseload of up to 350 students
  • Utilize workflow procedures for form submission, transfer course equivalency, and transcript updates
  • Assist students in navigating UMKC technology (Pathway/PeopleSoft, Canvas, UMKC Connect/Starfish, PlanMyDegree/UAchieve)
  • Monitor and assist students in completing academic milestones, success plans, enrollment, and progress
  • Maintain accurate advising notes and respond to early alert notifications in collaboration with academic units and success coaches
  • Support students facing academic challenges, including academic standing, satisfactory progress, GPA adjustments, and recovery protocols
  • Attend MAP team meetings, Advisor’s Forum, Advising Leadership Team (ALT), and other required trainings
  • Collaborate on team projects and provide caseload coverage during absences
  • Contribute to the scholarship and service of advising within Roo Advising, UMKC, and broader academic communities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Schedule

Work hours include in-person and virtual advising sessions during normal business hours (8 AM–5 PM). Summer Orientation (June–July) may require occasional weekend work. Advisors must monitor and respond to UMKC Connect (Starfish) early alerts and provide additional support as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience (e.g., student services, academic advising, leadership, or assistantships)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • 1–3 years of experience in student services or academic advising

Pay

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $42,000–$47,000 annually, depending on education, skills, and experience.
