About the role

The purpose of this position is to provide direct academic advising to individuals or groups of advisees to enhance the academic experience, student retention and completion. This role also assists with the administration and coordination of one or more essential academic advising programs or initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts academic advising for current and prospective students utilizing multiple modalities such as in-person, virtual, phone, and email.
  • Provides guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements, relevant course selection, and assists students in setting and achieving educational and career goals.
  • Helps students make informed academic decisions by teaching them how to track their own academic progress, locate and interpret appropriate policies, and utilize the tools and resources available.
  • Maintains a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and University policies and procedures.
  • Monitors the academic progress of a student caseload, including proactive outreach to provide students with just-in-time assistance.
  • Verifies degree progress, removes holds, and approves various forms to ensure timely student progression.
  • Analyzes and interprets student data, transcripts, and placement results.
  • Enters advising notes into MyMav following best practices for documenting student appointments/contacts.
  • Provides daily oversight and implementation of advising best-practices, communicates program requirements, creates reports, and continuously improves and assesses the advising program.
  • Speaks to various constituencies representing the university and academic advising community about the advising process, orientation, and other activities.
  • Assists with the training and onboarding of new academic advisors and may provide supervision of a small team of advisors and support staff.
  • Maintains a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and University policies and procedures.
  • Keeps abreast of relevant academic programs and supports services such as counseling and tutoring within a College and University and provides appropriate referrals to students.
  • Participates in meetings, professional conferences, and individual professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree and four (4) years of experience working with college students in an academic advising capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four (4) years of progressive academic advising experience at a public R1 University preferred.
  • Leadership and/or supervisory experience at an institution of higher education preferred.
  • Experience implementing, monitoring, and assessing student development programs/projects preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • High-impact academic advising practices;
  • CAS standards;
  • University academic advising practices;
  • Federal, state, and local policies and procedures governing academic advising functions, including probation, dismissal, and reinstatement processes;
  • College/school major and degree requirements;
  • Resources provided by academic advising associations such as NACADA and TEXAAN;
  • Working knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize the University Catalog;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students and colleagues from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.

Pay

The annual salary for this position ranges from $52,200 to $54,000. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
