Pay

Salary range: $45,000–$52,000

About the Role

Working under the guidance of experienced advising staff, the Academic Advisor I provides academic advising and support to undergraduate students in the College of Engineering. The advisor assists students with course selection, academic planning, major exploration, credit load decisions, and matters related to academic standing and probation. The advisor collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to communicate curriculum requirements, interpret university and college policies, and resolve academic concerns. The advisor also supports registration activities and helps connect students with appropriate campus resources to promote academic success.

The advisor meets regularly with assigned students, individually or in a group, to discuss academic and professional goals and monitor academic progress. The incumbent prepares and presents student orientation sessions and develops, coordinates, and implements educational counseling services geared to improving student success and retention. The advisor helps to coordinate advising with career planning and acts as an advocate and referral source by providing consistent outreach and follow-up services.

The Academic Advisor I represents the College at various related internal and external meetings and events and helps to position Temple and advising as highly respected and proactive. The incumbent helps facilitate communication of the Vision, Mission, policies and procedures, and academic goals of the College and Temple University while assisting with their development and implementation.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising and support to undergraduate students, including course selection, academic planning, and major exploration
  • Assist students with credit load decisions and matters related to academic standing and probation
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to communicate curriculum requirements and interpret university and college policies
  • Resolve academic concerns and support registration activities
  • Connect students with appropriate campus resources to promote academic success
  • Meet regularly with assigned students, individually or in groups, to discuss academic and professional goals and monitor progress
  • Prepare and present student orientation sessions
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement educational counseling services to improve student success and retention
  • Coordinate advising with career planning and provide outreach and follow-up services
  • Represent the College at internal and external meetings and events
  • Facilitate communication of the College’s Vision, Mission, policies, procedures, and academic goals

Requirements

This position requires a background check for PII/Cash Handling responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least two (2) years of directly related experience in an academic setting in higher education
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree

Skills

  • Ability to work with student information systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to maintain a positive and objective approach when confronted with difficult situations
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, administrators, and staff
  • Ability to prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to utilize word processing and database software
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and customer service skills
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to speak in front of small and large groups
