About the Role
DACC, a responsive, accessible, comprehensive, learning-centered community college, is inviting candidates to apply for the Academic Advisor position. This role supports new, transfer, readmitted, and continuing students in the Education and Early Childhood Education programs to identify, plan, and achieve their educational and career goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist students in identifying, planning, and achieving educational goals aligned with their career and life aspirations.
- Discuss academic habits and provide guidance on developing practical skills for academic success.
- Strategically plan steps toward graduation or completion of targeted academic goals.
- Identify and solve problems impeding academic progress (e.g., academic, social, work, interpersonal, or campus life adjustment).
- Develop student academic plans and assist with course selection and registration.
- Place students into initial English writing and mathematics courses.
- Travel to high school sites to engage with dual credit and early college high school students, educating them on programs of study and pathways.
- Verify eligibility and college readiness for the DACC Dual Credit Program.
- Plan steps toward completion of Dual Credit Program of Study or Early College High School (ECHS) Pathway.
- Assist students during new student orientations.
- Connect students with support programs (e.g., Avanza, Academic Readiness Center, Canvas training, financial aid/scholarships, career services, accessibility services).
- Maintain detailed student advising notes and update student records in the student information system.
- Act as the student responder for faculty-initiated early alert referrals, providing academic guidance and connecting students to supports.
- Communicate critical dates and deadlines to caseload students.
- Assist with academic needs such as financial aid appeals, VA degree checks for military veteran students, retroactive requests, Adjusted Credit Option requests, registration holds, and course substitutions.
- Assist inbound and outbound transfer students with transcript evaluation and transfer-related issues.
- Help students apply to graduate and complete final degree checks for degree or certificate applicants.
- Serve as a liaison between the DACC Academic Advising Center and the DACC Education Department.
- Partner with DACC and NMSU professional staff and faculty advisors to share advising-related information.
- Assist in training new academic advisors on policy and procedure.
Requirements
- Associate's Degree + 2 years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing academic advising in higher education.
- Professional experience working with students in education.
- Evidence of effective communication, problem-solving, high attention to detail, and motivation in application materials.
Working Conditions
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment.
- No or very limited physical effort required; occasional handling of objects up to 10 pounds.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
- Working extended hours from 5pm–6pm Monday–Thursday is required. Work hours are adjusted through the week to accommodate this.
Pay
$43,908.80 - $54,885.74 annually (commensurate with qualifications).
Schedule
Full-time (1.0 FTE), exempt position.
