About the role

Ivy Tech - Bloomington is seeking a dedicated Academic Advisor to join our collaborative team. This role involves providing personalized academic advising to help students define and achieve their goals.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personalized academic advising to help students define and achieve their goals.
  • Use a case management approach to assist students in understanding placement scores, program curriculum, and prerequisites.
  • Foster a supportive environment to empower students to succeed academically and beyond.
  • Refer students to appropriate internal and external resources that foster student success.
  • Manage academic advising case load in a manner that promotes retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and interventions.
  • Maintain academic advising records in compliance with College and FERPA.
  • Engage the college community in the academic advising process through a communication plan.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and organizations.
  • Attend and participate in registration fairs (on-campus/in-person).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related fields.
  • Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education, counseling psychology, or related discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in academic advising, admissions, career counseling or related higher education area is required or one (1) year of experience with a Master’s degree.
  • Minimum of one to two years of relevant experience demonstrating leadership qualities is preferred.
  • Community College experience or credential preferred.
  • Experience working with and being committed to diverse communication is required.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills, as well as the ability to demonstrate initiative and working in a team environment is required.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database applications including student records management systems and online social media tools.
  • Administrative and organizational skills along with strong customer service attributes are necessary.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the institution’s academic programs, curriculum, practices and academic and student policies.
  • Ability to manage academic advising case load in a manner that promotes retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and interventions.
  • Ability to monitor student progress through regular meetings, communications, interventions, assessments, and data collection.
  • Ability to develop and maintain appropriate relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to utilize a communication plan to engage the college community in the academic advising process.
  • Ability to actively participate in professional development opportunities and professional organizations, as well as college-wide committees, etc.
  • Ability to attend and participate in registration fairs (on-campus/in-person).
