Full-time, time-limited position in the Advising Center. One vacancy available. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the continuing availability of non-state funds.

About the Role

The Academic Advisor assists students, using a developmental model, in developing the knowledge, skills, and personal accountability needed to explore academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand university policies and timelines. This role addresses general advising, registration, and enrollment needs to increase retention and graduation rates. The position may include teaching up to two UNIV seminar courses, depending on institutional need.

Responsibilities

  • Guide students in educational planning, course selection, and resource awareness.
  • Help students navigate academic platforms such as Banner, Microsoft Outlook, and Canvas.
  • Generate reports on academic progression and track student records.
  • Respond to student inquiries, direct them to appropriate resources, and explain university processes.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Manage time effectively, work under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other university offices.
  • Occasionally work after 5:00 pm and on weekends, especially during peak times.
  • Comply with federal and university student confidentiality requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.

Skills

  • Knowledge of best practices in higher education for enhancing student academic skills.
  • Familiarity with advising and registration technology.
  • Strong communication skills for explaining, advocating, and reporting on program needs and academic outcomes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, student success technology, and virtual meeting platforms (Zoom/Teams).
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to prioritize while multitasking.
  • Ability to respond effectively to unexpected events and adjust plans as needed.
  • Ability to listen, analyze academic needs, and establish productive working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
