About the role
The Academic Advisor counsels students on degree curricula, academic regulations, policies, and procedures, including interpretation of the Official Advising Report, program changes, transfer credit, advanced standing, and graduation requirements. Advisors monitor student progress from admission through graduation, conduct individual advising sessions, and develop personalized degree plans to support course selection, degree planning, and academic goal setting. This role serves as a liaison between students and partner offices/colleges, proactively communicating via email, text, phone, in-person, and virtual meetings to promote student engagement and persistence.
Responsibilities
- Counsel students on degree curricula, academic regulations, prerequisites, graduation requirements, and interpretation of the Official Advising Report.
- Develop personalized degree plans and advise students on timely degree progress and completion.
- Proactively contact students at key points in their courses to ensure preparedness and offer assistance.
- Monitor and track student progress each semester, making course recommendations for subsequent terms.
- Advise and assess student requests for dropping courses, academic waivers, program changes, minors, catalog updates, graduation applications, and off-campus course approvals.
- Serve as a liaison between students and partner offices/colleges.
- Maintain knowledge of tuition costs, deadlines, and payment processes to prepare students for financial planning.
- Provide personalized advising for at-risk students, including those on conditional admission, academic warning, or probation, and encourage participation in academic improvement programs.
- Promote scholarships, institutional aid, Honors programs, career services, and other student resources.
- Collaborate with faculty to address student challenges related to course completion and retention.
- Assist students with textbook and course material issues, as well as navigation of university platforms (e.g., ERNIE, Campus Solutions, Canvas).
- Proactively contact students at matriculation, mid-semester, and for at-risk or inactive statuses to support persistence.
- Welcome new students, discuss enrollment steps (funding, prerequisites, to-do items), and ensure readiness for classes.
- Contact enrolled students each semester to assess progress, answer questions, and address challenges.
- Reach out to inactive students to address barriers to degree progression.
- Congratulate Dean’s List, Honor Roll, and graduating students, and promote alumni engagement.
- Communicate with students via email, text, phone, in-person, and virtual meetings to provide high-level customer service.
- Promote student/advisor appointments to increase engagement and maintain prompt attendance.
- Adhere to department dress code and virtual appointment background guidelines.
- Maintain accurate student records in Campus Solutions, Salesforce, Imaging, SharePoint, and other platforms.
- Document detailed advisor notes on student conversations and statuses.
- Resolve individual student enrollment and academic issues.
- Evaluate student prerequisite knowledge and ensure curriculum requirements are met.
- Maintain approximately 350–400 student files and meet individual advisor registration targets.
- Prepare quarterly reports and assist with coverage of student files during advisor absences.
- Collect and analyze data on student trends related to retention and academic success.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 1–3 years of related work experience.
- Ability to articulate components of effective academic advising practices.
- Demonstrated use of proactive and/or innovative approaches to working with college students, resulting in positive outcomes in persistence and retention.
- Preferred: Master’s degree.
- Preferred: Appreciative Advising certification/training.
- Preferred: Experience with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Salesforce, or other advising tools.

Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $43,888 to $46,000. The final offer will consider the candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, applicable state regulations, internal equity, and business needs.
