About the Role

The Academic Advisor mentors and advises students on academic and career matters to encourage professional development and enhance pursuit of academic goals. Advisors assist students in developing meaningful educational plans, promote intellectual and personal growth, and clarify educational, career, and life goals. They help students acquire relevant information and services, interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements, and evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choices, and class schedules in the context of students’ life and career goals.

Academic Advisors evaluate student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals, and academic stressors, and analyze student information system data to better understand the academic challenges faced by their student populations. Advising duties are based on theories and knowledge of teaching, advising, learning, and human development, and respond to the needs of individuals and communities.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and advise students on academic and career matters to support professional development and academic goal attainment.
  • Assist students in developing meaningful educational plans aligned with their life and career goals.
  • Promote student intellectual and personal development through guidance and support.
  • Discuss and clarify educational, career, and life goals with students.
  • Help students acquire relevant information and access university services.
  • Interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements for students.
  • Evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choices, and class schedules.
  • Administer and evaluate student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals, and academic stressors.
  • Analyze student information system data to identify and address academic challenges faced by student populations.
  • Apply theories and knowledge of teaching, advising, learning, and human development in advising practices.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in advising students in higher education settings.
  • Knowledge of academic requirements and university policies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of student development and support services.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
