Abstractor

The Role

The Abstractor at CoxHealth South is responsible for reviewing medical records, abstracting data, ensuring accuracy of discharge disposition, and gathering additional information as needed.

Responsibilities

• Review and abstract data from Inpatient/Outpatient medical records
• Perform Pre-Abstracting and Post-Abstracting based on assigned role
• Ensure accuracy of Discharge Disposition and Inpatient Admission order
• Gather additional information needed prior to finalizing abstract
• Work with Coding and Audit/Compliance & Compliance if needed
• May be assigned to additional tasks as needed

Requirements

• High School Diploma
• Prior HIM experience working with Analysis, Coding Support, or Document Imaging
• Competency with use of computers and various computer programs
• Analytical ability to interpret data from medical records and assign appropriate codes for accurate reimbursement
• Understanding of ICD-10-PCS and ICD-10-CM classification systems
• Preferred: AHIMA Coding Credential (CCS or AAPC) or Coding Credential (COC or CPC)

Qualifications

• Visual acuity necessary to read and decipher handwriting and electronic documentation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
