7920 Hot Cell Operations Technician

About the role

The Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Hot Cell Operations Technician to support operations and isotope production missions at building 7920. This is a 12-hour rotating shift position focused on radiochemical operations and processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform chemical processing operations including dissolution, separation, purification, recovery, and preparation of radioisotopes to support R&D and production efforts
• Support research and development, testing, and field application of equipment and processes for combining/separating chemicals, compounds, and related products using principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and related sciences
• Assist IPMD supervision in completing assigned tasks and responsibilities
• Identify potential problems, recognize unexpected results, and troubleshoot complex operational problems
• Obtain qualification as a Hot Cell Operations Technician in accordance with DOE Order 426.2
• Operate tele-manipulators and specialized hot cell processing equipment
• Prepare clear and accurate documentation (check sheets, data sheets, logs, forms) for all work performed
• Maintain work areas in a safe, clear, and orderly condition
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements

Qualifications

• Associate of Science degree in a technical field
• This position requires Rad Worker II training (provided in-house after hire)
• Proven ability to work safely in accordance with ES&H standards and procedures
• Ability to perform tedious tasks requiring extensive manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination

• Ability to manage time and work independently with minimal oversight, accomplishing multiple tasks in a complex environment with attention to detail and thoroughness
• Motivated self-starter able to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to meet deadlines, and adapt to changing needs
• Excellent organizational skills

Special Requirements

• Full-time staff position on a 12-hour rotating shift
• Pre-hire physical required for external candidates after offer

• Must obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance; all qualified applicants considered regardless of current clearance status
• Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position: requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in ongoing random drug testing
