6th Grade Math and Science Teacher - Midway Elementary School

About the Role

Instruct middle school students in foundational concepts across Earth and Space Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences, strictly aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science. This role requires a valid Tennessee teaching license with an Elementary (K-5/K-6) or Middle Grades Science endorsement.

Responsible for instructing middle school students according to the Tennessee Academic Standards for Mathematics, managing the classroom environment, and assessing student progress to drive achievement. This position typically reports to the school principal.

Responsibilities

Instruction

• Plan and deliver standard-aligned lessons focusing on core 6th-grade concepts like Earth's weather patterns, climate, ecosystems, and energy transformation.
• Align lessons with Tennessee state math standards, focusing core instruction on ratios, expressions, and equations.
• Incorporate technology and project-based learning into lessons.
• Differentiate instruction for diverse learners, English language learners (ELL), and students with special needs.
• Utilize district-adopted curricula.

Lab Safety & Management

• Organize, set up, and safely supervise hands-on laboratory experiments, engineering design challenges, and STEM learning activities.

Assessment & Data

• Develop assessments to evaluate student math competencies.
• Track academic data using district systems like PowerSchool.
• Analyze progress data to build targeted intervention plans.
• Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

Classroom Management & Communication

• Maintain an orderly, safe, and positive classroom environment.
• Implement behavior plans aligned with school-wide policies.
• Communicate progress regularly with parents and guardians.
• Submit grades timely to ensure transparency with families.
• Partner with parents, specialized instructional coaches, and administrators to track, report, and support student academic growth.

After-Hours Commitments

• Attend mandatory evening parent-teacher conferences to review academic performance, behavioral growth, and classroom progress with families.
• Participate in annual back-to-school nights, Title I STEM, robotics, or family science community outreach events.
• Remain after school for required faculty workshops, data-focused PLCs, and 504/IEP student placement reviews.
• Chaperone school dances, supervise middle school field trips, or voluntarily sponsor clubs like Science Olympiad, Eco-Clubs, or robotics teams.

Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Tennessee teaching license with appropriate endorsement (Elementary K-5/K-6 or Middle Grades Science).
