About the Role

The head coach is responsible for instructing athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success. The role emphasizes character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The coach must serve as a positive role model and stay updated on new theories and procedures in the sport.

The position reports to the athletic director and may involve supervising assistant coaches and middle school coaches. The role includes extended hours, risk of injury, and community expectations for performance while maintaining good sportsmanship and mental health.

Responsibilities

• Implement and enforce athletic policies approved by the Culver Community Schools Corporation Board of Education.
• Adhere to and interpret system, state, and league regulations for staff.
• Follow proper administrative channels for requests or grievances.
• Attend required public, staff, and departmental meetings.

Staff Responsibilities

• Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for the coaching staff.
• Organize conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure program awareness.
• Encourage professional growth through clinic attendance and training.
• Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant coaches at season’s end.
• Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
• Perform additional duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.

Administrative Duties

• Assist the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament requirements.
• Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
• Coordinate with maintenance and school employees for program needs.
• Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
• Ensure proper safeguards for equipment and facilities.
• Recommend policy, procedural, or method changes to the athletic director.

Student Responsibilities

• Mentor athletes to develop character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
• Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct.
• Provide guidance and safeguards during practices, games, and travel.
• Establish and enforce training rules and sport-specific regulations.
• Manage injury reporting, medical attention, and emergency procedures.
• Complete and submit injury reports within 24 hours.
• Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
• Enforce discipline, follow due process procedures, and contact parents when necessary.
• Assist athletes with college or advanced educational opportunities.

Finance and Equipment

• Participate in budgeting for the next season with the athletic director.
• Recommend equipment guidelines, including type, style, color, or technical specifications.
• Operate within budget appropriations and account for all equipment.
• Collect costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
• Manage issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment, including annual inventory.
• Properly mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
• Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing access as needed.
• Ensure athletes are only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
• Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games for cleanliness.
• Maintain and clean specific sport equipment.
• Secure facilities (doors, lights, windows, locks) when custodians are not present.
• Instill respect for equipment and school property in athletes.

Public Relations

• Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
• Promote the sport within the school by recruiting athletes not in other programs.
• Promote the sport externally through news media, little league programs, or other feasible methods.
• Maintain quality and validity of oral or written releases to local media.
• Foster positive public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
• Provide information to news media regarding schedules, tournaments, and results.

Requirements

• Ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive sports program.
• Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (major sports).
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and commitment to staying updated on new theories and procedures.
• Ability to serve as a positive role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
