4716 - Operator Equipment - Heavy 1

Overland Contracting Inc is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to work in PJCLEVELA2. This is a full-time, non-union craft position.

About the Role

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment (e.g., track loader, dozer, backhoe, excavator, scraper, grader, side boom, boring machine, RT Extended boom forklift) to excavate, move, and/or grade material according to project specifications.

Responsibilities

• Operate gasoline, diesel, pneumatic, or electric-powered equipment to move objects or material per project specifications.
• Assemble and operate compressors and pumps; control equipment levers and pedals to lower, lift, swing, or dump material.
• Adjust hand wheels and foot pedals to drive machines and control attachments such as blades, buckets, scrapers, and swing booms.
• Perform light maintenance duties including cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines; document maintenance logs.
• Conduct daily equipment inspections and document results.
• Coordinate machine actions with crew members using hand or audio signals.
• Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials using trucks, crawler tractors, shovels, graders, or related equipment.
• Check fuel supplies at sites to ensure adequate availability.
• Drive and maneuver equipment to remove topsoil, vegetation, rocks, or to distribute and level earth or terrain.
• Calculate slopes and grades of materials; understand trenching, excavating requirements, and regulations.
• Avoid potential hazards such as utility lines, other equipment, workers, or falling objects.
• Locate underground services (e.g., pipes, wires) prior to beginning work.
• Implement Red Tag procedures for equipment safety.
• Possess and maintain an OCI Equipment Qualification card for the unit being operated.
• Follow load capacity charts and ensure proper equipment support based on capacity and type.
• Observe load travel and take action to prevent injury or property damage.
• Participate in safety processes and programs to achieve zero injuries; use stop-work authority when needed.
• Report all accidents and near misses; participate in investigations as required.
• Engage in pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify and mitigate hazards.
• Respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, warning tags, sirens).
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills; perform basic arithmetic operations accurately.
• Listen to co-workers’ suggestions, concerns, and recommendations; provide feedback and ask questions.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience as an equipment operator with strong knowledge of operating and rigging crafts.
• Working knowledge of operating limitations and safe work practices for each piece of equipment.
• Executed Medical Examiner’s Certificate must be on file before operation begins.
• Commercial driver’s license required if operating equipment on public roads.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined, cluttered, or uneven areas.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Repetitive movement and climbing (e.g., steel framework, stairs, ladders, scaffolds).
• Work up to a 12-hour shift in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions (e.g., dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
• Work in very hot (above 90°F) or very cold (below 32°F) temperatures.
• Exposure to bright or low lighting, loud or uncomfortable noise levels, and hazardous equipment.
• This position is considered safety-sensitive.
