About the Role

Outside plant fiber optic cable splicing, including both ribbon fiber and loose tube fiber, installation of splice closures, unidirectional and bidirectional fiber testing, fiber troubleshooting and repair, and test report generation. Coordinate daily crew activities and work schedule, maintain a safe and quality work site, and ensure splicing rig and associated equipment are operational. Inspect all equipment assigned to the crew and maintain daily production rates while adhering to company safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Operate electronic fusion splicing and testing equipment, including single fiber fusion splicers, mass fusion splicers, OTDRs, power meters, and OCWRs for unidirectional and bidirectional tests.
• Read and interpret fiber splicing diagrams, prints, specifications, work scopes, and fiber optic color code charts.
• Perform ring cuts and install fiber closures, terminations, connectors, patch panels, and related materials.
• Mount FTPs and splicing cabinets, and bond and ground fiber cables according to client specifications.
• Connect wires and cables to terminals and attach/detach hardware to wires, cables, buildings, or poles.
• Work in right-of-way environments, on enterprise properties, or around cell site locations.
• Deploy and remove traffic control devices to protect the work area on streets or roadways.
• Complete weekly time sheets, production reports, and project status reports using computer software.
• Take site photos or photos of work performed using digital cameras as needed.
• Adhere to and support all safety-related policies, processes, and programs; engage with the work team to achieve zero injuries.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation processes as needed.
• Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job work planning and safety planning.
• Identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate them.
• Ensure all crew members understand, participate in, and sign pre-job safety planning tools.
• Understand and respond appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back-up alarms, smell of smoke, warning tags).
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills; coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers.
• Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to helpers and laborers, including safety practices and procedures.
• Read and understand MOPs, work orders, blueprints, plans, datasheets, site drawings, and specifications.
• Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions and complete As-Built or redline documentation on prints.

Requirements

• At least two years of experience working as a fiber splicing technician or a combination of work experience and training, with a working knowledge of fiber optic networks.
• Ability to understand and follow directions.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record for the last three years, as required by company policy.
• Ability to drive a pickup and trailer combination safely, including backing it up.
• Must be able to travel between remote site locations and pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Ability to perform rope access work and possess all necessary tools (see Fiber Optic Splicing Technician Tool list).
• Computer literacy with familiarity in laptops, tablets, and Microsoft Office suite.
• Knowledge of first aid procedures and CPR.
• Extensive knowledge of approved practices, procedures, tools, codes, and materials used in fiber optic cable splicing.

• DOT Certification
• Basic First Aid/CPR certification
• Confined space entry training
• OSHA 10-hour training
• Experience working with a piece-rate compensation structure

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined or cluttered spaces and uneven areas.
• Work in varying temperature extremes (above 90°F or below 32°F) and exposure to inclement weather (dust, wind, snow, rain).
• Work in cramped spaces, awkward positions, at elevations, and in confined spaces.
• Work in extremely bright or low lighting conditions and around hazardous equipment.
• Exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
• Climb up and down steel frameworks, stairs, ladders, and machinery.
• Work up to a 12-hour shifts doing hard physical labor in outside conditions, including occasional night work.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
• Repetitive movement and use of hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
• Push, pull, reach, and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
