About the role
The role involves assisting Solar Technicians in assembling, installing, and maintaining solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Tasks include measuring, cutting, assembling, and bolting structural framing and solar modules. Responsibilities also include lifting, carrying, and holding building materials, tools, and supplies; cleaning tools, equipment, material, and work areas.
Responsibilities
- Use appropriate hand tools and power tools to perform various functions to install PV systems in compliance with codes and standards.
- Lay-out, assemble, and install solar modules, panels, or support structures as specified.
- Install structural, mechanical, rack systems, and PV panels.
- Lift, carry, and hold building materials, tools, and supplies.
- Clean tools, equipment, material, and work areas.
- Engage with work teams to ensure zero injuries and adhere to safety protocols.
- Report accidents and near misses to supervisors and participate in investigations.
- Identify and address safety hazards and take corrective actions.
- Attend site-specific training and follow established safety rules and regulations.
- Operate construction equipment safely and maintain it in good condition.
- Notify supervisors of any hazards observed and utilize safety stop work authority if necessary.
- Examine and inspect field conditions to identify problems and take corrective actions.
- Assist in the storage, planning, and layout of materials in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Learn to observe and visualize functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
- Perform on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities with co-workers.
- Ensure quality work meets requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
- Read and understand plans and specifications, and visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
- Assist journeymen in laying out work and learn to perform layout independently.
- Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
- Perform all other actions necessary to accomplish the foregoing principal duties and accountabilities.
- Work in other crafts at appropriate levels as requested by project supervision.
- Perform all other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.
Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience working as a laborer or in any construction craft as a helper.
- Knowledge of assembly, installation, or maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
- Ability to understand and follow directions.
- All necessary tools (see Solar Tool List).
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Skills
- Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and fractions).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Safe work practices and adherence to safety protocols.
- Understanding and responding appropriately to safety hazards and warning devices.
- Knowledge of lockout/tag out procedures.
- Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
- Ability to visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
- Ability to operate construction equipment safely.
