About the role

Betterment is a leading financial services company offering investing, savings, and retirement solutions. This role is ideal for someone who can serve as a trusted advisor to strategic 401(k) clients, focusing on driving plan success and participant outcomes.

The role involves managing a book of clients, guiding them on retirement and financial wellness goals, and collaborating with various teams to ensure seamless onboarding and early value realization.

The ideal candidate should have 4+ years of client-facing experience in the retirement plan space, a deep understanding of 401(k) plan administration, and proven ability to influence and align stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a book of strategic 401(k) clients, serving as a trusted advisor focused on driving plan success and participant outcomes.
  • Align with clients on retirement and financial wellness goals, and deliver a clear roadmap to achieve them.
  • Guide clients and their employees on plan design, rollovers, and participation strategies through engaging sessions and impactful resources.
  • Guide the client through annual compliance needs serving as the main point of contact and trusted advisor.
  • Partner with Sales and Implementation to ensure seamless onboarding and early value realization.
  • Identify risks, resolve challenges resourcefully, and implement strategies to retain and grow client relationships.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to represent the Voice of the Customer and enhance the platform experience.
  • Conduct regular strategy sessions to track progress, optimize plans, and uncover opportunities to expand Betterment’s offerings.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of client-facing experience, within the retirement plan space.
  • Deep understanding of 401(k) plan administration, participant engagement strategies, and plan sponsor dynamics.
  • Proven ability to influence and align internal and external stakeholders toward measurable outcomes.
  • Highly skilled in managing multiple complex priorities and resolving issues independently with accountability and follow-through.
  • Strong communication skills—verbal and written—with the ability to engage clients at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness: leverages available tools effectively and seeks opportunities to improve outcomes even in ambiguous or constrained environments.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and a growth mindset with a passion for continuous learning and coaching others.
  • Advanced proficiency in tools such as Salesforce, Asana, and Excel is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in finance, economics, or related field.
  • Experience in financial planning, retirement consulting, or similar roles.
  • Knowledge of ERISA regulations and compliance standards.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Experience with retirement plan software and systems.

For those located elsewhere, the actual compensation offered will be based on candidate experience and geographic location.

This role is remote eligible, except for the New York City metro area, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Washington, D.C., & Orange County, CA.

Pay

NYC (In-office): $99,000-$118,000
Remote (Eligible locations only): $85,000-$105,000

Full-time, salaried role.
