About the role
Carrier, a global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions, seeks an experienced and dependable Staff Technician in its engineering laboratories. This role involves test execution, operating chillers in both water-cooled and air-cooled labs, setting up test environments, calibrating equipment, and ensuring efficient chiller operation.
Responsibilities
- Performs basic to moderately complex technical tasks contributing to engineering projects.
- Operates, inspects, and maintains chillers, test setups, and equipment.
- Works with electrical equipment, including 460-3-60 machinery, handles refrigerants, and holds EPA certification.
- Selects, connects, and troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration systems on Charlotte-manufactured equipment.
- Performs loop calibration, valve configurations for single and double loops, operates, troubleshoots, and calibrates power management, VFDs, boilers, and valves.
- Coaches team members, collaborates with cross-functional teams, and reports results/issues to relevant teams to drive resolution.
- Advocates for a safe workspace, promotes 5S practices, and supports Carrier's EHS policies.
- Safeguards lab uptime by reporting instrument failures and enhancing preventive maintenance.
- Captures and reports test status, issue reporting, applies and teaches measurement techniques, test report writing, and systems troubleshooting.
- Proactively resolves testing hurdles by consulting with development and other relevant process partners.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED with 5+ years of experience in chiller/HVAC operations, station, and chiller, or 5 years in laboratory environments, for mechanical/electrical machinery.
- 5+ years of experience with hand/pneumatic tools, advanced shop mathematics, complex measuring equipment, precision measuring instruments, and other tools.
- Preferred requirements include an AS or AAS in a related technical field, technical/business school certificate, skilled trades apprenticeship, proven leadership in chillers, reporting results, expertise in loop tuning and drive test cycles/loop efficiency, HVAC design, components, and ability to operate chillers, understanding of close loop control systems, loop stability, reading and interpreting complex drawings, schematics, and blueprints, experience with medium voltage operations, including arc flash and lockout/tagout procedures.

- 5+ years of experience in chiller/HVAC operations, station, and chiller, or 5 years in laboratory environments, for mechanical/electrical machinery.
- 5+ years of experience with hand/pneumatic tools, advanced shop mathematics, complex measuring equipment, precision measuring instruments, and other tools.
Preferred Requirements
- AS or AAS in a related technical field, technical/business school certificate, skilled trades apprenticeship.
- Proven ability in independently leading/run chillers, reporting results, expertise in loop tuning and drive test cycles/loop efficiency.
- Technical expertise in HVAC design, components, and ability to operate chillers.
- Understanding of close loop control systems, loop stability.
- Reading and interpreting complex drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
- Experience with medium voltage operations, including arc flash and lockout/tagout procedures.
Work Environment
- Hands-on role requiring frequent standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing ladders, and working around moving mechanical equipment.
- Exposure to temperature variations, refrigerants, compressed gases, and other lab-specific conditions.
- Occasional after-hours or weekend work may be needed to support critical maintenance schedules.
