About the Project

The M is partnering with Penny Kagigebi (White Earth Ojibwe/direct descendant) to develop Queering Indigeneity, a multi-year, multi-generational project focusing on 2-Spirit, Native queer, and gender-expansive vision in great diversity and celebration.

Guided by Kagigebi, the M aims to amplify Indigenous artists and culture bearers, influencing the types of artists supported, seen, and centered at the museum. The project seeks to present both Indigenous and non-Indigenous visitors with a more comprehensive, nuanced, and authentic narrative of Minnesotan art and artists.

Queering Indigeneity will open at the M in the Nancy and John Lindahl Gallery on September 18, 2025, featuring 16 Native artists from the Upper Midwest:

  • Sharon Day
  • Ryan Young
