About the Project

Beginning in 2023, the M has partnered with Penny Kagigebi (White Earth Ojibwe/direct descendant) to develop Queering Indigeneity, a multi-year, multi-generational project focusing on 2-Spirit, Native queer, and gender expansive vision in great diversity and celebration.

Guided by Kagigebi, the M aims to amplify voices of Indigenous artists and culture bearers to influence both the types of artists supported, seen, and centered at the museum, and to present Indigenous and non-Indigenous visitors with a more comprehensive, complicated, and true story of Minnesotan art and artists.

Queering Indigeneity will open at the M in the Nancy and John Lindahl Gallery on September 18, 2025, featuring 16 Native artists from the Upper Midwest:
