About the Role
The Shipping Lead verifies and supports shipping functions and procedures, prepares items for shipment, and participates in continuous improvement, planning, scheduling, and reporting activities. This role helps department leaders develop a positive work culture.
Responsibilities
- Safety Responsibilities (100% time):
- Follow all safety rules and regulations, including wearing required PPE (bump cap, ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves).
- Ensure others in the Shipping Department follow safety rules.
- Report non-working equipment to Maintenance.
- Follow procedures outlined by the Shipping Manager.
- Understand and follow food safety guidelines and USDA regulations.
- Monitor the location of drivers and restrict access to loading dock areas.
- Associate Interaction and Involvement (80% time):
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to associates.
- Assist with conflict resolution and training.
- Foster positive working relationships and ensure proper procedures are followed.
- Supervise daily activities to maintain a safe, secure, and clean environment.
- Ensure associates have access to necessary tools and that tools are inspected and maintained.
- Assist the Shipping Manager with shipping and receiving processes, including accuracy checks, CAT2 transactions, and inventory management.
- Perform cycle counting and resolve inventory discrepancies.
- Assist with inventory movements from production to storage or work areas.
- Inspect loading operations for compliance with shipping procedures and policies.
- Seal trailers, prepare bills of lading, and manage loaded trailers and truck doors.
- Support shipping/receiving procedures and workflow efficiency in a limited space.
- Communicate effectively with clerks, administration, management, and teams to ensure order accuracy.
- Demonstrate advanced skills with forklifts and electric pallet jacks.
- Continuous Improvement Process (10% time):
- Assist with improving productivity by focusing on process effectiveness and associate efficiency.
- Provide feedback on safety, labor, and best practices to the leadership team.
- Participate in process development, projects, and best practice implementation.
- Planning (5% time):
- Assist with daily workload and staffing adjustments to minimize overtime.
- Provide feedback on changes that may affect department productivity.
- Communications and Reporting (5% time):
- Communicate work task Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during pre-shift meetings and ensure proper shift hand-offs.
- Coordinate with Department Managers, Supervisors, Quality Assurance, and other personnel to meet delivery, cost, and quality objectives.
- Track KPIs, quality reports, audits, and material handling equipment reports.
- Prepare end-of-day reports on inbound/outbound activities, challenges, safety incidents, and other key activities.
Requirements
- Previous Shipping/Receiving experience required.
- High School Diploma desired.
- Must be able to effectively read, write, and speak English; bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Strong math skills required for various tasks.
- Ability to make decisions based on Shipping SOPs, policies, and good judgment.
- Computer literate with intermediate Excel skills.
- Proven ability to motivate, coach, and train subordinates.
Physical Demands
- Adequate eyesight and hearing to recognize hazards to equipment and personnel.
- Ability to turn in all directions to observe nearby objects and employees.
- Full range of motion in extremities for proper movement and handling of product.
- Ability to walk or stand for at least 90% of assigned shift.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
Work Environment
Must be able to work in a cold and wet environment, typically ranging from 0°F to 27°F.
Schedule
The hours and days of work are based on departmental needs and at the discretion of management. Overtime or schedule changes may be required as circumstances arise.
