About the Role

The Machinist 2 reports to the manufacturing supervisor and is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining several machine types in an industrial setting. The position involves troubleshooting, moderate decision-making, and problem-solving. The role works under limited supervision and provides guidance to other members, with limited contact with external suppliers or customers.

Responsibilities

• Sets up and operates machines with little or no supervision and performs required process checks or inspections per process documentation.
• Provides training to others in the department when necessary and double-checks the work of others.
• Completes paperwork while adhering to record retention requirements.
• Utilizes basic continuous improvement processes to improve operational effectiveness.
• Identifies, documents, and controls nonconforming material according to procedures, identifies and implements corrective actions, and implements root cause corrective actions.
• Adheres to all safety standards, regulations, and operating procedures.
• Utilizes computer programs to enter part data (e.g., serial number), log time, look up instructions and blueprints, and download programs.
• Uses work instructions, set-up sheets, and method documents to correctly set up machines and inspect machined parts.
• Utilizes various gauging equipment to ensure conformance to engineering specifications and standards through the production run.
• Collaborates with appropriate organizations to develop and assist in the implementation of process plans and improvements.
• Cleans and maintains measuring instruments and test equipment and inspects parts for cleanliness (e.g., routed and deburring operations).
• Operates precision inspection equipment and performs first-piece check-out when applicable to the job.
• Interprets and follows blueprints for proper production task completion.
• Performs routed operations of precision close-tolerance parts.
• Communicates information about project status, updates, and specific instructions, and reviews item status in MRP to ensure proper logging/closure.
• Cleans and organizes the immediate work area.
• May perform secondary work functions, such as deburring and sub-assembly with certifications, as required.
• May set up Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machinery and make adjustments when necessary.
• Monitors and maintains the condition of cutting tools.
• Notifies supervisors and other personnel of production or machine problems.
• Promotes teamwork within the organization.
• Verifies the calibration of equipment and expiration dates.
• Obtains certifications as necessary for required processes.
• Completes and reviews product paperwork, verifying all documentation is present and filled out appropriately.
• Follows all departmental safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 2-5 years of experience required.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply inspection techniques (e.g., formalized inspection standards, inspection instructions, best practices) and use inspection tools efficiently.
• Ability to read and use micrometers, functional and cylindrical gauges, comparators, indicator setups, calibration stickers, and scales.
• Intermediate ability to read, interpret, and use information presented in drawings, diagrams, and blueprints to determine appropriate activities, tools, and next steps in the production process.
• Ability to learn and use available business software as necessary.
• Knowledge of part special handling guidelines and specifications, including researching handling instructions and following required procedures.
• Knowledge of nonconformance procedures and processes when parts fail inspection, including logging and tracking failed inspections and associated documentation.
• Intermediate knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (e.g., perpendicularity, parallelism, flatness), including interpreting tolerances on prints and performing inspection techniques.
• Knowledge of CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) programming/machining, including reading, understanding, and editing basic programs, and/or basic knowledge of grinding, turning, milling, or drilling.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement processes to enhance operational effectiveness.
• Understanding of how quality impacts organizational success, including costs to customers, recalls, and reputational risks.
• Ability to use computer and web-based systems to input, access, modify, or output information or execute programs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey information clearly to coworkers and supervisors, and provide guidance through instruction and example.
• General knowledge of machines and equipment functionality, including how tools interact with equipment and systems, and the ability to optimize processes.
• Ability to provide excellent service to internal customers.

This position is part of an IAM Bargained Group and requires use of information subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Pay

Estimated hourly pay: $34.94 - $51.24, plus shift differential and overtime if applicable. Salary is determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and market data alignment.

Schedule

This is a full-time, regular position anticipated to be short-term through July 31, 2027, due to relocation of product lines. The position is eligible for negotiated severance benefits following termination of employment.
