About the Role

The Machinist 2 reports to the manufacturing supervisor and is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining several machine types in an industrial setting. This role involves troubleshooting, moderate decision-making, and problem-solving, working under limited supervision while providing guidance to other team members. There is limited contact with external suppliers or customers.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate machines with little or no supervision, performing required process checks or inspections per process documentation.
• Provide training to others in the department and double-check the work of others.
• Complete paperwork while adhering to record retention requirements.
• Utilize basic continuous improvement processes to enhance operational effectiveness.
• Identify, document, and control nonconforming material according to procedures, including implementing root cause corrective actions.
• Adhere to all safety standards, regulations, and operating procedures.
• Use computer programs to enter part data (e.g., serial numbers), log time, look up instructions and blueprints, and download programs.
• Utilize work instructions, set-up sheets, and method documents to correctly set up machines and inspect machined parts.
• Use various gauging equipment to ensure conformance to engineering specifications and standards throughout production.
• Collaborate with appropriate teams to develop and implement process plans and improvements.
• Clean and maintain measuring instruments and test equipment, inspecting parts for cleanliness (e.g., routed and deburring operations).
• Operate precision inspection equipment and perform first-piece checkouts when applicable.
• Interpret and follow blueprints for proper production task completion.
• Perform routed operations of precision close-tolerance parts.
• Communicate project status, updates, and instructions to others, and review item status in MRP to ensure proper logging/closure.
• Clean and organize the immediate work area.
• Perform secondary work functions such as deburring and sub-assembly with certifications, as required.
• Set up Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machinery and make adjustments when necessary.
• Monitor and maintain the condition of cutting tools.
• Notify supervisors and other personnel of production or machine problems.
• Promote teamwork within the organization.
• Verify calibration of equipment and expiration dates.
• Obtain certifications as necessary for required processes.
• Complete and review product paperwork, ensuring all documentation is present and filled out appropriately.
• Follow all departmental safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 2–5 years of experience required.
• This position is part of an IAM Bargained Group.
• This position requires use of information subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR and EAR or possess required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Commerce. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e., 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.

Skills

• Knowledge of and ability to apply inspection techniques and use inspection tools efficiently.
• Ability to read and use micrometers, functional and cylindrical gauges, comparators, indicator setups, calibration stickers, and scales.
• Intermediate ability to read, interpret, and use information from drawings, diagrams, and blueprints to determine production activities and tools.
• Ability to learn and use available business software as necessary.
• Knowledge of part special handling guidelines and specifications, including researching handling instructions and following required procedures.
• Knowledge of nonconformance procedures and processes when parts fail inspection, including logging and tracking failed inspections.
• Intermediate knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (e.g., perpendicularity, parallelism, flatness), including interpreting tolerances and datum structures.
• Knowledge of CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) programming/machining, including reading, understanding, and editing basic programs, and/or experience in grinding, turning, milling, or drilling.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement processes to enhance operational effectiveness.
• Understanding of how quality impacts organizational success, including costs to customers, recalls, and reputational risks.
• Ability to use computer and web-based systems to input, access, modify, or output information or execute programs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide guidance through instruction and example.
• General knowledge of machines and equipment functionality, including process optimization and identifying improvement opportunities.

Pay

Estimated hourly pay: $34.94 - $51.24. Salary is determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and market data. Shift differential and overtime are available if applicable.

Schedule

This is a full-time, regular position anticipated to be short-term due to relocation of product lines. Employment is expected through July 31, 2027, with eligibility for negotiated severance benefits following termination.
