2nd shift CNC Setup Machinist

About the role

The CNC Setup Machinist fabricates parts on numerically controlled machines, working from design and specifications. They determine machining requirements, prepare mathematical definitions of parts, edit programs as needed, and ensure machine operation. This role involves setting proper speeds, feeds, and cutter types to maximize machine efficiency and preparing input for computer-generated machine control programs. The position requires adherence to standard work instructions to ensure quality production of parts.

Responsibilities

• Edits and troubleshoots G code programs and makes adjustments to tooling offsets based on knowledge and experience.
• Performs set up operations for all types of work orders per SMED process sheet.
• Validates unproven CNC programs for first-time manufacture.
• Edits programs at the machine, including processes and tooling, to ensure finished products meet specifications.
• Reviews production orders for machining jobs and determines dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces by reviewing data sheets, blueprints, and materials.
• Performs complex series of progressive machining operations on a diversified line of parts.
• Provides technical expertise and support to CNC Operators to solve production problems and increase efficiency.
• Collects and records Statistical Process Control (SPC) data as required by inspection methods for each order to ensure quality standards are met.
• Operates the Optical Comparator and other measuring tools to ensure correct dimensions of machined parts.
• Oversees machine operation throughout the production run to ensure part conformance.
• May be required to run more than one machine simultaneously per standard work.
• Cross-trains in other areas as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of 5-7 years of CNC experience in a manufacturing environment operating CNC equipment.
• Experience with 5S and Lean Manufacturing is a plus.

Skills

• Ability to set up, edit, and operate CNC lathe and mill.
• Ability to read and edit G code programs and adjust tooling offsets.
• Troubleshooting skills to provide sustainable solutions.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English (written and verbal).
• High mechanical aptitude and ability to operate CNC machinery efficiently.
• Extensive knowledge of machining tools and processes.
• Ability to read and execute requirements on blueprints, drawings, and work instructions.
• Excellent math skills for processing work instructions.
• Knowledge of materials and material requirements, including nonconforming material procedures.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to set up machines and instruct other operators.
• Excellent knowledge of SPC charts and ability to read them.
• High level of attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to adapt to constantly changing priorities.
• Intermediate computer skills.
• Ability to use and read measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, scales, and other quality control tools.
• Ability to read measurements between .100 to .0001.

Work Environment

• Prolonged standing, walking, squatting, twisting, bending, and reaching throughout an entire ten-hour or eight-hour shift.
• Ability to move and handle varying sized tools and dies in a dirty, dusty, and noisy environment.
• Requires lifting up to 50 pounds and working with large machinery and cutting tools.

• Must wear appropriate PPE for all work activities performed; varies based on work.

Pay

Hourly - $32.00 - $40.00
