27-017 Swim Instructor, Part-Time

Part-time position with varying hours. Pay: $17.55 per hour.

About the role

Perform professional work ensuring the safety and use of swimming pool(s). Teach all levels of swimming skills to individuals ranging from infants to senior citizens, assist in coordinating various aquatics programs, and maintain the facility as needed. Greet the general public, answer questions, and collect fees and registrations.

Responsibilities

• Patrol the pool and maintain and enforce safety rules and regulations.
• Organize and conduct safety and rescue drills.
• Teach all levels of swimming skills to individuals ranging from infants to senior citizens.
• Attend to multiple tasks simultaneously or in sequence.
• Greet the public using the aquatic facilities and participate in pool patrolling.
• Receive user’s fees, handle cash drawer, and collect fees for memberships, lockers, and facility use.
• Respond to public inquiries about aquatics programs via telephone, correspondence, or in person.
• Perform miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, running errands, picking up supplies, selling tickets, collecting fees, and helping set up for special events.
• Supervise classes and activities for persons engaged in aquatics programs and co-sponsored programs.
• Assist and attend various aquatics competitions throughout the year as needed.
• Assist in regular and special aquatics programs and register participants.
• Maintain the swimming pool, including monitoring and maintaining the pool filtration system.
• Monitor pool water chemistry through testing of water samples and adjust chemistry as needed to maintain standards.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and agencies, and the general public.
• Maintain familiarity with and execute safe work procedures associated with assigned work.

Requirements

• High school diploma and a minimum of two years experience in teaching aquatic programs.
• Certificates in Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), CPR, and First Aid.

Skills

• Knowledge of First Aid and water rescue operations.
• Ability to work under physically and emotionally stressful situations.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written orders, directions, and instructions, and abide by the rules and regulations of the department.
• Ability to work safely in changing work environments both inside and outside, including exposure to chemicals.
• Ability to lead and instruct others in techniques and methods used in various work activities.
• Ability to write reports and maintain accurate records.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
• Thorough knowledge of swimming, water safety skills and techniques, and related activities.
• Good physical condition and stamina.
