About the Role

The primary responsibility of the CLDE Teacher is to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in an elementary or secondary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher performs instructional and related duties in accordance with District policies and terms of the teacher contract, maintains a cooperative attitude with staff, parents, and students, and provides English Language Development instruction to students in grades 9-12 who have been in the country for less than 2 years.

This role involves teaching Culturally Linguistically Diverse Education using differentiated learning strategies to enable students to make academic and socio-emotional growth, and assisting students new to the United States to acculturate into the educational system successfully.

Responsibilities

• Establish a safe and nurturing learning environment for students where background knowledge, language, and culture are valued.
• Orient students and families to a new culture, school, and community, allowing time for students to participate in classroom discussions about their country, family, successes, and challenges.
• Collaborate with grade-level teachers to enhance supports for newcomer students in staff, grade-level, and professional learning community settings.
• Build strong relationships with parents to address the instructional needs of newcomer students and sustain ongoing communication.
• Teach Designated and Integrated CLD, developing lesson plans according to the Colorado Academic Standards and WIDA Standards/Can Do Descriptors.
• Build students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with an emphasis on oral language development using strategies and hands-on instructional materials.
• Collaborate with other teachers to select materials specific to teaching English Language Development at lower language proficiency levels.
• Conduct formative and summative assessments to evaluate English Language development and share those assessments with students and classroom teachers.
• Maintain a comprehensive record system to reflect on academic success and language development.
• Identify students' areas of strength and needs for improvement, monitor student achievement, and adjust instruction in response to student data.
• Attend and engage in district and school meetings and activities for planning and program design purposes.
• Participate in district and school professional development.
• Ensure English language development (ELD) services are effective in meeting the needs of English learners (ELs), including:
  • Proper identification of ELs in a timely manner.
  • Administration of W-APT, WIDA ACCESS, and WIDA MODEL.
  • Initiation and ongoing development of individual ELD Plans.
  • Use of data to monitor and inform academic progress, instructional planning, and language needs.
  • Engaging and rigorous instruction for language development and access to content.
  • Ongoing support for core academic teachers, providing assistance with sheltered instruction and other effective strategies for ELs.
  • Communication with parents as required and appropriate.
  • Active participation in monthly ELD department meetings and related professional development.
• Provide a variety of classroom techniques and methods to promote high levels of achievement in relation to individual student abilities.
• Use techniques and methodologies appropriate to student abilities, relevant subject matter, and current technology to support and differentiate instruction.
• Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use research-based principles of effective instruction.
• Organize instruction using learning objectives with clearly defined student outcomes and employ teaching strategies congruent with planned outcomes.
• Monitor student learning and pace instruction accordingly.
• Prepare effectively for class, including daily lesson plans and classroom activities.
• Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
• Establish written grading standards that incorporate a variety of graded activities and ensure they are explained and available to parents.
• Develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships, modeling behaviors of honesty, fairness, courtesy, and consideration.
• Maintain a cooperative relationship with administrators, staff, students, and parents, sharing appropriate information.
• Provide documentation of students' progress and timely, accurate feedback to students, parents, and staff.
• Assign and check homework, providing appropriate feedback.
• Proficient use of email, spreadsheets, Google Docs, etc., for department communication and file sharing.

Requirements

• Valid Colorado Teaching License within 60 days from date of hire.
• English as a Second Language (ESL), Bilingual Education (BIED), Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education Endorsement (CLDE), or Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Endorsement.
• Teacher must be highly qualified in the applicable content area through:
  • Endorsement on a Colorado teaching license, or
  • Passing score on a State Board of Education approved content exam (currently the ETS Praxis Series).
• Minimum two years of experience teaching English Learners in a general education classroom setting.
• Experience designing units and lessons aligned with the CLD/WIDA framework.
• Must complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check and be cleared by the Office of Human Resources.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

Qualifications

• Preferred Spanish language proficiency.
• Experience providing guidance and support to other teachers working with English learners.
• Knowledge of and experience with Colorado English Language Proficiency (CELP) Standards.
• Training and experience in sheltered instruction.
• Understanding of WIDA assessment process and Can-Do Descriptors.
• Bilingual, including English.
• Experience in a Title I or low-income setting.
• Previous experience as a certified teacher.
• Knowledge of content standards and implementation of standards-based curriculum.
• Ability to teach and meet the academic needs of all students, ensuring progress in all content areas, especially in reading/writing and mathematics.
• Ability to collaborate with instructional staff and use data to make instructional decisions.
• Knowledge/experience with the five components of reading and commitment to support explicit, systematic reading instruction based on scientific research.
• Ability to use technology and integrate technology skills into the curriculum.
• Knowledge/experience teaching diverse learners, including students with IEPs, ILPs, ELL, or 504 plans.
• Demonstrated effective classroom management skills.
• Knowledge/experience with scientific-based research best practices and ability to implement them.
• Experience with small groups and whole-class direct instruction strategies to differentiate instruction.
• Knowledge/experience in implementing the Title I parental involvement plan.
• Knowledge/experience with Positive Behavior Support Program or willingness to implement the school-wide discipline plan.
• Ability to unpack standards and align them with curriculum, write specific learning goals, objectives, and outcomes.
• Ability to analyze and use multiple data sources to make sound instructional decisions.
• Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and actively participate in professional learning communities.
• Ability to scaffold and differentiate instruction.
• Computer expertise or willingness to learn Infinite Campus.
• Positive public relation skills, professionalism, strong work ethic, and ability to develop positive relationships with school and community.
• Ability to demonstrate communication skills with students, parents, and teachers to enhance educational, personal, and social aspects of each student.
• Ability to interpret test information and data.
• Strong commitment to system change and evidence of being a "team player."
